Tanalised treatment is a lifetime preservative treatment. We offer pressure treated Shed or Gazebo and other garden buildings.
The preservative is forced into the timber under pressure and penetrates below the surface, whereas all other treatments apply a coat of stain to the surface of the timber only. Pressure treatment is almost colourless except for a slight green tint caused by the copper content in the preservative. No further treatment is ever needed but if you want a coloured finish you can paint over pressure treated timber with normal wood preservative in any colour.
Timber Buildings are usually built from kiln-dried Wood, this is because mature trees have moisture in them, and once they have been chopped their moisture level will drop to equate to the surrounding environment. This can take many years if left to occur naturally, but kiln-drying the logs speeds up this process. As they dry, the logs shrink slightly most of the shrinkage actually happens before manufacture, but once the Timber Building has been installed, a further amount of shrinkage is likely to occur as the Timber acclimatise to their location. As wood is a natural product, it is natural you may notice small splits and cracks in some of the logs, this is due to the thickness of the wood, this will not harm your Building structure. Settlement As the Wood shrink a little, settlement will occur in your Timber Building, which will cause the walls to lower, sometimes as much as a couple of centimeters. This is a natural occurrence. Wood PreservativeIt is universally recommended to treat your Timber Building with a good quality wood preservative, to help prevent decay and rot. As an additional suggestion, you should retreat your timber building yearly with an exterior varnish or wood stain, as UV rays are deceptively damaging.Maintenance Tips: Its a good idea to keep plants and trees away from the perimeter edges of your yimber building they can prevent the sun and air circulation from drying out any moisture. To check whether your logs need retreating, spray a bit of water on a section of your timber building; if the water beads and rolls down, this is an indication youre ok for another year.
If the water starts to soak in, its a good time to consider a new coat of treatment. Be sure to check any log ends, as the cut end grain will be where most moisture is absorbed. Moisture control and damp management are key factors in increasing the longevity of your log cabin.
Guttering is a great investment, if you have guttering already, be sure to check it regularly for any obstructions, such as leaves. Its a good idea to make sure any soil or earth around the log cabin isnt too close to the base a minimum of 2 from the base will reduce rain splashing back onto the wood. Minor adjustments may need to be made to the doors from time to time due to the swelling nature of the wood this will most likely need to be done near the changing of the seasons, because there is more moisture in the air during the colder months, and less during the summer months. With a small amount of effort, and regular checking and maintenance, you can ensure that your timber building will last a lifetime and longer. Timber is natural material and is subject to climate changes including warping and splitting particulary in extremes of temeprature. This process is natural and beyond our control and is not covered by a guarantee. Our roofing felt is specially formulated for use on garden buildings, occasionally the felt can ripple ; this is due to temperature changes and not to any fault in the material. Dont worry, weve got this one covered. Were experts when it comes to all things timber, so we have designed our products from the ground up with its natural properties in mind. How you customise and decorate your product is up to you, however we would recommend that you use an appropriate water repellent treatment. This really helps minimise the amount of moisture that the timber can absorb. Therefore minimising the risk of any major movement.
Please note: water repellent treatment is not the same as pressure treatment, which protects against rot and insect infestation, and which we guarantee for 10 Years! Keeping your timber building ventilated is no less important than keeping your house well ventilated. This is especially true if you plan to cover up your floorboards with something (double check with an expert, that the material is suitable to do so), as moisture can become trapped between layers of non-breathable materials and build-up, leading to floors becoming rotten. Whether you opt to build your product yourself, or have us do it for you, dont be afraid to tighten the odd bolt here and there.Your product is a life improving investment, so its only right to give it some love and care from time to time. Make sure that its properly treated before the rainy months, and you make adjustments to doors and window frames, when needed.
After building your timber product, this natural construction will begin to settle. This means that you will likely see some natural timber imperfections appear. These types of natural imperfections can include: Crack, Splits, Shakes Waraping / Twisting Expansion And Contraction.
